House Rewiring

House Rewiring in Shreveport, LA | Ed's Electric

Ed's Electric has been rewiring Shreveport, Bossier City, and Northwest Louisiana homes for 40+ years — Highland bungalows with original knob-and-tube, 1960s and 70s ranches with aluminum branch wiring, and midcentury cloth-insulated NM. We phase the work so you keep power in most of the house every night, pull the permit, meet the inspector, and leave you with a fully grounded, AFCI/GFCI-protected system that drops your homeowners premium.

When a Shreveport home needs a rewire

Three wiring systems trigger a rewire in our market. First, knob-and-tube — original to pre-1950s Highland, downtown Shreveport, and older Broadmoor bungalows. It has no ground, degrades where it passes through insulation, and most homeowners insurance carriers now refuse to write policies on it. Second, aluminum branch wiring — 1965–1975 subdivisions across South Highlands, Ellerbe Road, and older Bossier. Aluminum expands and contracts at outlets and switches, loosens connections, and causes fires. We pigtail with copper at every device using approved AL/CU connectors, or (better) rewire and be done with it. Third, cloth-insulated NM cable — brittle at every junction, common in 1950s–1960s ranch homes, and often failing where it enters boxes.

A rewire includes new NM-B copper home runs to every device, a modern grounded outlet at every location, AFCI protection on bedroom and living-area circuits, GFCI in kitchens, baths, laundry, garages, and outdoor, dedicated circuits for appliances and modern loads (fridge, microwave, dishwasher, disposal, HVAC), and NEC 230.67 whole-home surge protection at the service. Most rewires pair with a 200A panel upgrade — the old fuse box or 100A split-bus can't handle the AFCI/GFCI breaker density anyway.

We minimize drywall damage. Wiring gets fished from the attic, crawl space, and closets — most rewires only need small cut-ins at old-work boxes, which we make in inconspicuous locations. On plaster-walled Highland homes we take extra care to avoid cracking the plaster keys behind the finish coat. We coordinate with your drywall or plaster crew, or refer one.

Permit is on us. We pull the electrical permit with the correct parish authority (Caddo, Bossier, or DeSoto), meet the inspector on site, and coordinate the SWEPCO disconnect and reconnect for the service-side work. You get a paid invoice and a signed inspection card — the two documents your insurance carrier will ask for to update your policy and drop your premium.

House Rewiring FAQ

How much does it cost to rewire a house in Shreveport?

Whole-house rewires typically run $8,000–$18,000 for a 1,200–2,000 sq ft home in Shreveport or Bossier City, depending on attic and crawl-space access, the number of circuits, and whether we're also replacing the panel. We provide free written estimates with the scope spelled out before any work begins.

Do I have to move out during a rewire?

No. We phase the work room by room so you keep power to most of the house every night. Full power interruption is usually limited to a few 2–4 hour windows for panel and service work.

How do you avoid tearing up my drywall?

We fish wiring through walls, ceilings, and floors from attic, crawl space, and closets — minimizing cut-in points. When cuts are necessary, we make them small, clean, and in inconspicuous locations. We coordinate with your drywall crew or refer one.

Do you handle knob-and-tube, aluminum, and cloth wiring?

Yes — those are our three most common rewire scenarios. Knob-and-tube (pre-1950s Highland and downtown homes), aluminum branch wiring (1965–1975 subdivisions), and cloth-insulated NM cable that's brittle at every junction. We replace with modern copper NM-B, AFCI/GFCI protection where code requires, and grounded outlets throughout.

Do you pull permits and coordinate the inspection?

Yes. Rewires require electrical permits in Caddo, Bossier, and DeSoto parishes. We pull the permit, meet the inspector on site, and coordinate the SWEPCO disconnect and reconnect for any service-side work.

Will my homeowners insurance cover this?

Insurance usually won't pay to rewire proactively, but many carriers now refuse to write policies on knob-and-tube or Federal Pacific / Zinsco panels. A rewire almost always drops your homeowners premium — we've had customers see 10–20% reductions after presenting a paid rewire invoice and inspection sign-off.
