Three-phase power, explained plainly

Most Shreveport commercial buildings run one of three services: 120/208V wye three-phase in multi-tenant retail and offices, 277/480V wye in warehouses and big-box space where high-bay lighting and large HVAC live, or 120/240V single-phase in older converted storefronts. Which one you have decides what equipment you can add. Restaurant kitchens, compressors, elevators, air handlers, and most commercial refrigeration want three-phase — putting them on a single-phase service means bigger conductors, higher current, and motors that run hot and die early.

When a tenant brings in equipment the building was never designed for, we do a load calculation against the existing service before anything gets ordered. That usually means a demand study on the main, checking available fault current for the new gear's AIC rating, and confirming the utility transformer can carry the added kVA. If it can't, we handle the SWEPCO service-upgrade application and schedule the cutover for a night or a closed day so you don't lose a shift. Motor loads get proper starters or VFDs, not oversized breakers, and every new feeder leaves with a torque record and an updated panel schedule taped inside the door.
